Space is one of the biggest challenges schools face. Class sizes grow, needs become more complex, and the main building rarely has spare rooms waiting to be used. That’s why so many schools now choose to add an outdoor classroom: a dedicated, purpose-built space that gives you more room to teach, support and nurture pupils, without the disruption of a major building project.

At Cabins for Schools, we design, manufacture and install bespoke modular school rooms that are built specifically for education. We don't believe in a one-size-fits-all solution. Your setting is unique, as are the needs of your staff and students. This is why we offer our lined and insulated outdoor classrooms in virtually any size, and they can be configured to suit your requirements. What's more, we offer a completely free design service and a free site survey, making it easy to visualise your new school room before committing.

What is an Outdoor Classroom?

It's an additional standalone teaching or support space located within the school grounds, the perfect solution for creating space to expand capacity, promote inclusion, and improve access to dedicated, tailored support. Unlike a standard classroom inside the main building, it gives schools a separate, calmer environment that can be used flexibly throughout the day.

Schools, nurseries and other educational settings use outdoor classrooms in lots of different ways, such as for small group work, interventions, nurture sessions, SEND support, reading groups or pastoral support. Because they are separate from the main building, they often feel quieter and more focused, which can make a real difference for children who struggle in busy, noisy environments.

Why Schools and nurseries are choosing Modular Buildings

Many schools and nurseries come to us because they simply don’t have enough space inside their existing building. Converting offices, libraries or halls usually just moves the problem somewhere else. An outdoor classroom creates new space without taking away from what you already have.

Other schools want a space that feels different to a normal classroom. A separate building can be calmer, more contained and better suited to targeted interventions, nurture groups or SEND provision. It also helps pupils mentally separate “support time” from the rest of the school day.

Our buildings are also much quicker and less disruptive than traditional extensions. There’s no months of builders moving through the school, and in many cases the building can be installed in a matter of days once it’s ready.

Connection to Nature

School outbuildings strengthen students' connections to nature. They provide exposure to natural light, fresh air, and green spaces. This can reduce stress and anxiety, improve mood, and boost cognitive function and focus.

Frequently Asked Questions Outdoor Classrooms

What is an outdoor classroom?

An Outdoor Classroom is an additional building detached from the main school build. This means you have the freedom to choose where it’s placed on your school grounds. At Cabins for Schools, we have a range of Outdoor Classrooms and log cabins to suit the needs of your school. Outdoor Classrooms are gaining popularity as an effective and cost-efficient way to supplement the learning space available at schools. They’re also becoming more common due to the unique learning environments they provide. Schools find these spaces to be perfect for libraries, nature learning, and SEND.

How do you set up an outdoor eco classroom?

Setting up an outdoor classroom couldn’t be easier with Cabins for Schools. From design to installation, our team of experts have your school covered.

We are proud to offer a design and build system for facilities for use in education. When you order your new school room, we will arrange a convenient delivery and installation schedule. We tailor our affordable quotes to your needs. The cost of delivery and fitting depends on the size of your building, where you live, transportation distance, and how many people will be required to set up your school building.

What makes a great Outdoor Eco Classroom?

This depends on how your school intends to use your outdoor eco classroom or log cabin. We can design and fit great classrooms to suit the needs of your school. Whether you want a spacious cabin which accommodates a class of 30 or a smaller cabin perfect for smaller group work, our experts will work with you to create a fantastic educational space. Some schools create cosy reading nooks with beanbags and blankets, while other schools create music rooms and kit them out with drumkits and keyboards. You can check out some further popular uses here

Here are some general tips for creating a great outdoor eco classroom:

– Comfortable seating and work surfaces for students and teachers

– Weather-resistant, durable materials to withstand outdoor conditions

– Shade structures or canopy to protect from sun and rain

– Storage solutions for educational materials and supplies

– Accessibility features to ensure all students can participate

– Nature-inspired elements, such as plants, gardens, or water features, to enhance the learning environment

– Interactive elements, like whiteboards or chalkboards, for group activities

Can outdoor classrooms support SEND or SEMH interventions?

Absolutely. Outdoor classrooms provide a calm, low-stimulus additional environment away from the busy main classroom, perfect for 1-to-1 interventions, nurture groups, or SEND support sessions. Since our outdoor classrooms are bespoke, they can be tailored to create the ideal space for the needs of your staff and students.

How long will the building last?

Our modular school rooms are built to last for many decades with basic maintenance, and we offer a 10-year guarantee as standard.

What is included and what is excluded?

Our eco school rooms are supplied and installed ready to use. The price includes manufacture, delivery and installation, along with internal electrics and lighting, insulation, internal lining, Polyflor vinyl flooring, painting, windows, doors and guttering. The base is included in most cases.

One exclusion that applies is the external power supply cable. You will need a qualified electrician to install and sign off the armoured cable from your school to the building before installation day. We send clear guidance on this in advance so your electrician knows exactly what is required. If you would prefer us to arrange this, we can do so at an additional cost.

Can you install during term time?

Yes, and many schools prefer it. Our DBS-checked installation teams work throughout the year, including during term time.

We plan every installation carefully to minimise disruption to the school day. We observe drop-off and pick-up restrictions, maintain a safe exclusion zone around the build area and work closely with the site manager throughout.

Some schools prefer holiday installations for peace of mind. Naturally, those dates do tend to fill up quicker. If you have a specific holiday slot in mind, it is worth speaking to us sooner rather than later.

How many children will fit in the building?

This varies by building size and layout. As a general guide, our most popular outdoor classroom sizes accommodate 8-15 children comfortably for small group work, interventions and support sessions. Seating arrangements for our standard sizes are shown in our brochure.

For schools looking to use the building as a full classroom for a larger group throughout the day, our permanent buildings are designed for exactly that purpose, and we will plan the internal layout around your specific requirements.

What are the benefits of learning in an outdoor classroom?

There are so many! Firstly, when students get outside, it’s known to enhance their critical social and emotional learning skills, such as empathy. Also, it has been shown to enhance self-control, having care for others, and independent, self-directed learning. Moreover, time spent in nature helps to develop problem-solving abilities, focus, attention span, and executive function skills. It can bring abstract theories to life and emphasises learning by doing. Importantly, nature-led learning has been shown to result in higher academic achievement, as well as contributing to improved social skills.

Children are more active outdoors. Outdoor play reduces sedentary time, improving health outcomes. Step outside and get fresh air! Not just for the health benefit, but fresh air is great for attention levels too. Additionally, outdoor learning supports mental, physical, nutritional, and emotional health across all age groups and educational needs. Furthermore, nature-based outdoor environments can reduce stress and increase relaxation.

Green school grounds provide a connection to nature for children in urban communities where this may be less accessible. They lead to better social-emotional outcomes and enhance long-term health.

Do you need planning permission for an outdoor classroom?

Planning permission requirements for outdoor eco classrooms vary depending on the size, location, and specific regulations in your area. It’s essential to consult your local planning authority to determine whether planning permission is needed for your project. In some cases, outdoor classrooms may fall under permitted development rights, which do not require planning permission.

How much does an outdoor classroom cost?

Since all of our outdoor classrooms are bespoke, the cost varies depending on factors such as size, cladding options, and specifications.

Please request a copy of our pricing guide to see example project prices. This is a great starting point for project feasibility.

We can also provide a bespoke quote, which can also be used for funding applications or grant proposals. Please get in touch with our education building experts who will be happy to support.

Can we get funding for an outdoor classroom?

Yes - many schools use grants and funding to make outdoor classrooms a reality. Funding options include local authority grants, government education grants, forest school funding, and community or charitable schemes.

At Cabins for Schools, we’ve partnered with FundEd, a specialist funding service that helps schools identify and apply for grants for school buildings and outdoor learning spaces.

We also maintain a dedicated Funding for Schools page, where we regularly post the latest funding opportunities, tips for applying, and practical advice to make the process easier. Whether you’re exploring small grants or larger government schemes, our team can provide tailored support to maximise your chances of securing funding for your new outdoor classroom.

What sort of base is required?

For modular classrooms, we most commonly use a post and beam system. This is quick to install, causes minimal disruption to the ground, and works well on slightly uneven sites. It is suitable for grass, earth or tarmac.

We also offer a screwpile system, which may be preferable on a sloping site or where the building will be used for heavier activities.

In either case, we require the area to be clear of trees and shrubs before we arrive.

If you are providing your own concrete base, it needs to be built to the correct dimensions, level across its full surface and solid enough to prevent any movement. (We send detailed guidance on this and ask you to share photos before installation day so we can confirm everything is ready.)

How long does it take to build, and will we need a crane?

No, you will not need a crane. Our buildings are constructed on site by our own installation teams, and the process is designed to be as quick and unobtrusive as possible.

For outdoor classroom buildings, the main installation typically takes between 3-5 days depending on the size of the building. The base, vinyl flooring and painting are each done on separate visits either side of the main build.

From the point of order through to your classroom build being ready to use, the typical lead time is 8-12 weeks. This can vary depending on our installation schedule and whether planning is required, but we will always give you a realistic timescale upfront.

Can we see a building nearby?

For most areas, yes! We have installed buildings in hundreds of schools across the UK, and our interactive schools map shows completed installations by location.

Many of our customers are happy to welcome prospective schools for a visit, and we can often help facilitate an introduction.

We also have a permanent showroom in Nottingham where you can see a full-size modular classroom and sensory room, fitted out and ready to walk around. It gives you a much clearer sense of the space, the quality and the finish than any photograph can. We would love to show you around!

Will the building stand up to rough treatment?

Yes. Our buildings are built for schools, and that is reflected in the materials and construction throughout. Whether you opt for Marley board, Knotwood, cedar or redwood cladding, all of our external finishes are robust and chosen for their durability in a school environment. The interiors are lined and finished to a standard that holds up to everyday school life.
