Learning and Support Spaces For pupils with ALN
Creating environments that support pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is key to inclusive education. At Cabins for Schools, we design and build modular classrooms, breakout spaces, sensory rooms and outdoor learning cabins tailored to ALN pupils across the UK. Whether you’re providing ALP (Additional Learning Provision), supporting pupils with an IDP (Individual Development Plan), or looking to improve access to nature-based learning for neurodivergent learners, we work closely with ALNCos, SENCOs and school leaders to create calm, flexible, and nurturing environments.

Across the UK, the number of pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN) is increasing. According to Welsh Government data, nearly 1 in 4 children now require some level of additional provision. This includes needs related to: Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC), ADHD, speech, language & communication needs (SLCN), Social, emotional and mental health (SEMH), sensory processing difficulties, and physical and medical needs.
ALN requirements can change quickly, and schools are under growing pressure to deliver inclusive learning environments. Unfortunately, having enough space to facilitate quality, tailored support is typically the biggest challenge. That's where modular buildings can provide a cost-effective and timely solution. Whether your educational setting is responding to rising EHCP numbers or need to implement a new nurture or resource base, our education building experts can design, manufacture and install a log cabin, eco school room or permanent building ideal for your ALN pupils.

- Separate entrance or proximity to main buildings
- Options for sensory integration
Expanding capacity for Tailored small group work
At Billesley Primary School, we installed a bespoke 7.5 × 4 m redwood-clad Eco Classroom designed to serve as a nurturing, calm space for pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Built with biophilic design principles, this dedicated space provides a comfortable setting for both group work and individual interventions. Working with social workers, the school uses the space for LAC (Looked After Children) support, nurturing conversations, emotion-regulation sessions, LEGO therapy, and open-theatre activities that benefit pupils with ASD, speech and language needs, and communication barriers.
By offering a quiet, adaptable environment away from mainstream classroom noise, the Eco Classroom has become essential in helping ALN pupils feel safe, supported, and better able to engage, making it a powerful tool in enhancing ALN provision at Billesley.

Developing Provisions for Inclusive Forest School & Outdoor Learning
At Moorgate Primary Academy, we worked with the school to create a dedicated Forest School space that supports pupils with Additional Learning Needs (ALN). Their timber log cabin provides a warm, sheltered environment where pupils can access outdoor learning in all weathers - crucial for consistency, regulation, and inclusion. The cabin is used daily for nature-based sessions, small group work, and as a calm, quiet alternative to classroom settings.
For pupils with autism, sensory needs, or anxiety, the Forest School approach helps support emotional wellbeing, builds confidence, and encourages meaningful engagement. The addition of the cabin has transformed a previously underused part of the school grounds into a purposeful, high-impact space that enhances ALN provision and supports whole-child development.
Creating Space for Animal-Assisted Therapy
Portland College decided to take Animal-assisted therapy to the next level by choosing our experts at Cabins for Schools to create an outdoor building where animal interaction sessions and animal care lessons could take place year-round. We designed and installed a bespoke redwood outdoor classroom style modular building for them. This high-quality outdoor building provides Portland College with extra space for outdoor activities, perfect for animal therapy provision.
We agreed that adding a veranda would be a great for their requirements, as the veranda would provide an extra element of shelter for their donkeys! With the building having large glass windows and doors, the young people attending Portland College can choose to observe the donkeys from indoors should they wish, or join them under the veranda for petting sessions or animal care lessons. This makes the space accessible for a variety of people's needs.

ARBs (Additionally Resourced Bases)
We can design, manufacture and install bespoke modular cabins designed to support specialist provision attached to mainstream schools, with ALP delivered in a tailored, purpose-built space.
Our cabins are ideal for use as ARBs, offering a calm, contained space for pupils with complex needs. Whether you're looking to house a small class group, run targeted interventions, or create a flexible ALN hub, we’ll design a building that supports your staffing model, schedule and pupils.
LEGO Therapy Rooms
Facilitating effective Lego Therapy sessions consistently can be a logistical challenge when space is tight. A dedicated log cabin or eco school room gives your TA or intervention lead a quiet, low-distraction space where groups can focus without being moved between rooms. You can offer structured, play-based social communication interventions with the flexibility to timetable sessions across the week.
ELSA Spaces
If you're delivering ELSA sessions, you need more than a spare table in the corridor. Our cabins provide a safe environment that helps pupils open up and regulate. Designed with natural materials and soft lighting, they’re built to support the relationships and routines ELSA relies on. Whether your ELSA is full-time or part-time, these spaces make it easier to embed emotional literacy work and wellbeing support into the rhythm of the school day.
Family & Pupil Engagement Rooms
Transition Rooms / Nurture Bases
Transitions - whether into school each morning, between key stages or during reintegration - can be smoother with the right environment. Our cabins create safe, predictable spaces where pupils can settle, build relationships, and access a slower-paced curriculum. They're ideal for nurture groups or phased-entry models, giving staff the room to support pupils while reducing pressure on classrooms.
Pastoral & Safeguarding Hubs
For ALN pupils who need time out, emotional check-ins or daily regulation, our cabins offer an effective environment where schools may otherwise be using corridor corners or busy offices. Of course, pupils need their own dedicated space. Designed to support low-arousal environments, our log cabins and eco school rooms work well as pastoral bases, mental health hubs, or zones for short-term de-escalation. Because they’re separate from the classroom but still part of the school day, they help staff offer consistent, proactive support.

Frequently Asked Questions Additional Learning Needs Provision
What does ALN mean in schools?
What is ALP in education?
ALP stands for Additional Learning Provision – the specific educational or support interventions or environments given to pupils with ALN. This might include small group work, 1:1 support, a sensory room, access to a break out space, or tailored teaching methods.
What is an IDP?
An IDP (Individual Development Plan) is a legal document that outlines the learning needs of a child with ALN, and the support they will receive. It’s developed with input from teachers, Additional Learning Needs Coordinators (ALNCos), parents, and sometimes the pupil.
Do we need planning permission for an ALN cabin?
In most cases, planning permission is not required for our modular ALN cabins, as they fall under permitted development. Our permanent buildings for ALN provision are subject to building control.
What types of school buildings support ALN learners?
Outdoor classrooms, breakout cabins, sensory pods, and small-group learning rooms are highly effective for pupils with ALN. These spaces help reduce anxiety, minimise distractions, and support emotional regulation.
Can you build sensory rooms for ALN pupils?
Yes. We design and install bespoke sensory cabins in partnership with Sensory Technology, with features like soft lighting, acoustic insulation, calming colours, and equipment integration to support ALN learners with autism, ADHD and sensory processing difficulties.
