Why Sensory Rooms Make a Difference

A well‑designed sensory room can help students to self‑regulate, focus, and build resilience throughout the school day. By creating a space where learners can reduce overwhelming sensory input, or actively stimulate their senses when needed, you can support emotional regulation, reduce stress, and build a sense of safety and belonging.

Each bespoke sensory room can be tailored for its intended use, making it a calming space for one‑to‑one interventions, a quiet area for recovery after sensory overload, or an interactive space for exploration and learning. From adjustable lighting and tactile surfaces, to soundscapes and aromatic elements, every design choice can support the unique needs of its users.

We understand that every educational setting is different, which is why we work closely with schools to design sensory rooms that reflect their space constraints, student needs, and operational requirements. We create spaces that fit precisely, working in 10cm increments, ensuring every corner is used effectively and every element is intentionally placed.

Explore the Range Popular Sensory Room Equipment & Benefits

Interactive Borealis & Snowstorm Tubes

The Borealis Tube and Snowstorm tube are both fantastic interactive features to a sensory space, providing high levels of visual stimulation and engagement. Whilst the borealis tube creates dancing light sequences, the snowstorm tube creates a mesmerising snowstorm effect. Both have options for users to interact with and change elements such as colours, sequences and speed. This is done through user controls (such as switches and cubes), displaying various colours that once pressed, will reflect within the equipment.

SEN Benefits:

  • Visually Engaging Stimulation: Changing colours, patterns, and sequences provide visual engagement and can support colour recognition—ideal for those who respond well to visual input.
  • Cause and Effect Learning: Aids cause and effect learning as users can see the direct results of their actions through interacting with the user controls.
  • Emotional Regulation: Helps create a calming and soothing environment, reducing anxiety and stress for individuals with sensory processing challenges.
  • Motor Skill Development: Using interactive controls to strengthen fine motor skills and improve hand-eye coordination.
  • Boosts Engagement and Control: Encourages active participation and gives users a greater sense of control over their environment.

Fibre Optic Harnesses

Fibre Optic Harnesses provide high levels of tactile and visual stimulation, encouraging user engagement through gentle interaction and mesmerizing lights. Each fibre strand showcases a calming, soothing light that users can touch.

SEN Benefits:

    • Supports Emotional Regulation: A safe and engaging sensory tool that helps reduce stress and improve focus.
    • Promotes Exploration and Skill Development: The interactive nature of the bright lights encourage exploration, support fine motor skills, and enhance spatial awareness.
    • Ideal for Tactile Learners: Especially effective for individuals who respond positively to touch-based sensory input.
    • Encourages Calm and Engagement: Fosters a sense of calm while promoting positive interaction in both social and educational settings.

I-Digital Infinity Panels & I-Digital Ladderlight Panels

The I-Digital Infinity Panel & Ladderlight Panel are both interactive wall panels, using interactive LED technology to create a selection of visual effects. Both can be controlled with an inbuilt microphone that can pick up on sounds and react with dancing lights. Whilst the Infinity Panel displays an endless light illusion, the ladderlight displays multi-coloured tiers moving side/side or up/down.

SEN Benefits:

  • Visual and Auditory Stimulation: Changing colours, patterns, and sequences provide visual interest and can support colour recognition—ideal for those who respond well to visual input. Utilising sound to interact with and alter the effects can also provide an additional level of engagement.
  • Cause and Effect Learning: Aids cause and effect learning as users can see the direct results of their actions through interacting with the inbuilt microphone.
  • Boosts Engagement and Control: Encourages active participation and gives users a greater sense of control over their environment.
  • Develops Visual Tracking Skills: The movement of lights and the illusion of depth can enhance visual tracking and hand-eye coordination.
  • Emotional Regulation: Helps create a calming and soothing environment, reducing anxiety and stress for individuals with sensory processing challenges.

Abstract Tactile Panels

Abstract Tactile Panels are fixed wall panels that feature a selection of shapes, textures and patterns for users to explore.

SEN Benefits:

  • Supports Sensory Integration: Helps users process and integrate a range of sensory information through touch, improving their ability to organize and respond to their environment.
  • Improves Focus and Attention: Through the exploration of the patterns, textures and shapes, concentration can be increased and attention can be maintained for longer periods.
  • Promotes Emotional Regulation: Gentle tactile input can have a soothing effect, helping individuals manage emotions and reduce anxiety or stress. This may be particularly beneficial for users with sensory processing challenges who respond well to certain textures and patterns, which can be a useful tool during times of sensory overload.
  • Encourages Social Interaction: Using various tactile panels with others can help build communication skills and promote positive social engagement through shared play.

Liquid Floor Tiles

Liquid Tiles are a visual and tactile feature that are filled with a liquid gel which shifts into an array of patterns in response to touch/pressure. With the addition of backlights, the bright colours and shapes are amplified for further visual stimulation.

SEN Benefits:

  • Visual and Tactile Stimulation: The changing colours and shapes displayed through the tactile input (e.g. pressure of hands or feet) provide high levels of visual stimulation, with additional tactile stimulation gained from the texture of the tile and the pressure applied to create the end result. Utilising body movement to interact with and alter the effects can also provide an additional level of engagement.
  • Encourages Calm and Engagement: Fosters a sense of calm through the deep-pressure input of the tiles, while promoting positive and engaging interaction in both social and educational settings.
  • Cause and Effect Learning: Aids cause and effect learning as users can see the direct results of their actions through applying pressure to the tiles.
  • Development of Gross Motor Skills: Using bodily movements to apply pressure to the tiles encourages the development of gross motor skills - improving mobility, coordination and overall physical development.

Interactive Projection System - Sensor Floor

The Sensor Floor is a floor based projection system, which uses motion tracking to project a moving image/scene onto the floor which changes upon user interaction. The system features a selection of fun, educational and engaging games and media.

SEN Benefits:

  • Facilitates a Fun and Engaging Learning Experience: A variety of fun and interactive visuals, sounds, and activities can facilitate a more engaging way of learning for users who struggle to focus, and promote active involvement in learning tasks. Educational games can be incorporated into lessons such as maths, science or spelling.
  • Develops Social Interaction and Participation: Group-based activities can promote teamwork, social engagement, and verbal or non-verbal communication through the variety of fun & interactive activities.
  • Supports Individual Learning Needs: Experiences can be adapted to suit each user’s abilities and preferences, creating a more meaningful and engaging learning journey. (e.g. For users who responded well to sports, you can utilise football themed games).
  • Encourages Reward-Based Learning: Through the activities, you can incorporate a reward based system for active participation, in-turn facilitating cause-and-effect learning with users receiving varied rewards or points for completing tasks.
  • Promotes Active Sensory Play With Visual and Auditory Stimulation: In addition to learning, with the variety of media and activities, this can also just be a great tool for users to play whilst still gaining a variety of sensory stimulation. Not only visually, but with the selection of sounds that accompany each theme.

Immersive Walls & Projections

Immersive Rooms / Wall Projections create scenario-driven environments, allowing users to become fully immersed within the space. With pre-programmed media and themes, this provides a fun and engaging experience, within a controlled environment. 3D and 4D effects can also be incorporated such as scent diffusers and wind machines to help create a fully immersive experience.

SEN Benefits:

  • Encourages Safe Exploration of Real World Scenarios: Allowing users to experience everyday situations in a safe, controlled setting through realistic simulations. This is particularly beneficial for individuals prone to sensory overload who can take the time to process and understand certain environments / social situations
  • Develops Social Interaction and Participation: Group-based immersive activities can promote teamwork, social engagement, and verbal or non-verbal communication through the variety of scenes/media displayed.
  • Supports Individual Learning Needs: Experiences can be adapted to suit each user’s abilities and preferences, creating a more meaningful and engaging learning experience. (E.g. For users who responded well to nature, you can incorporate safari, sealife or farm scenarios into the learning experience).
  • Supports Behavioural Development: Immersive scenarios can reinforce positive behaviours and teach appropriate responses to different social or sensory situations.
  • Emotional Regulation: Helps create a calming and soothing environment, reducing anxiety and stress for individuals with sensory processing challenges. Calming scenes such as waterfalls, beaches or snowfall are just a few of the relaxing scenes that users can immerse themselves in for de-regulation.
  • Inspires Creative Thinking: Immersive environments encourage imaginative play and creative expression through rich, stimulating sensory experiences.

Frequently Asked Questions Sensory Rooms & Sensory Pods

What is a sensory room?

A sensory room is a specially designed space that provides a calming, interactive environment for individuals with sensory needs. It uses a mix of lighting, textures, sounds, and equipment to help children and young people self‑regulate and feel safe. Sensory rooms are widely used in schools, special educational settings, and therapy environments to support pupils with SEN, autism, ADHD, and other Additional Learning Needs (ALN).

What are the benefits of a sensory room?

Sensory rooms can have a profound impact on a child’s emotional and physical wellbeing. They provide a space to reduce anxiety, improve focus, enhance sensory processing, and support emotional regulation. By creating a safe and adaptable space, sensory rooms can help students better engage with learning and build resilience throughout the school day.

What do you need for a sensory room?

A well‑designed sensory room includes a mix of equipment and design elements tailored to the needs of its users. Common features can include adjustable lighting, soundscapes, fibre optics, tactile surfaces, immersive projections, and interactive sensory equipment. We work closely with you to select equipment from our partner, UK leading supplier Sensory Technology, ensuring every item suits your space and the children it supports.

How much does a sensory room cost?

The cost of a sensory room depends on its size, layout, equipment options, and level of customisation. What is a sensory pod?

A sensory pod is a compact, standalone space that delivers the benefits of a sensory room in a smaller area. It’s ideal for schools with limited space or as an additional area for focused sensory support. Our sensory pods can be designed with the same high‑quality equipment and finishes as our larger rooms, providing a flexible and immersive space for your students.

What sensory equipment can I include in a modular sensory room?

We work with Sensory Technology, market leaders in sensory equipment, to create spaces that suit your school and students.
