Crowlands Primary's Modular School Library

Crowlands Primary School in Essex approached us to replace their outdated, unreliable library bus with a high-quality, dedicated space for reading. Their main priorities were to create a space that would be accessible for all pupils, fit in their available outdoor space, and be low maintenance.

We designed and installed a bespoke modular library (8m x 3.5m, finished with zero-maintenance Marley board cladding), creating an accessible, welcoming environment for all pupils. We spoke to Headteacher Sarah Clark about the challenges they faced, the design process, and the impact the new modular library has had on pupils across the school...

What led you to replace your previous library bus with a dedicated modular library?

"The Library bus was worn out and looked tired. There were many continued faults with the bus, so in the end it was not cost effective for us, and wasn't enticing for the pupils. As we are quite a small site, we needed something that would easily fit in the space we had, and something that was aesthetically pleasing for our pupils. It was also essential that the we replaced the library bus that was accessible to all our pupils, ensuring that our library was inclusive for all. When we researched the modular library, it became apparent very quickly that you could make the sizing bespoke for what you needed with a range of options for the interior, electrics, flooring and windows. The process was straightforward and stress free."

How has the new library changed the way pupils engage with reading?

"Pupils are excited to go to the new library. The modular library is spacious which means that there are no restrictions when the pupils go to the library. They are able to explore the books that we have and not be restricted with space or areas to take time to read the books. Previously, having a bus meant that there were health and safety restrictions for how many were allowed on at one time and having issues such as leaks in the roof meant that many of the books were damaged from the rain. Pupils really value the books now, and the new space has ignited their love and passion for reading. "

How have pupils responded to their library?

Our pupils at Crowlands love their new library and are excited for their class visits weekly. We've received wonderful feedback, such as:

  • 'The library is so great, we get to sit with our friends now and read books together.'

  • 'Having the new library means that we can all take part in the paired reading in a relaxed environment.'

  • 'We are lucky to have our new library and that means that we can take books home again that we want to read. I don't really have any books that I like at home.'

What design features or layout choices have helped make the library welcoming and inspiring?

"As you make the modular cabin bespoke with what you want and need, the flexibility in designing the modular library makes the process very straightforward. We found that we changed the number of windows from the first design so that we had more natural light in our modular library. From the first draft of the layout, we were able to visualise what the library would look like and how you may want to adapt it to meet the needs of the community that it is serving."

What difference has this investment made to your school community?

"Pupils now have a calm and relaxing space to read. The investment has enabled our pupils to have experiences that no longer exist in the local community. A number of the the Library spaces locally have closed, therefore the investment has allowed us to give the pupils the continued experience. This is also a space where pupils can nurture and flourish in their interests by reading books to give them information, to increase their knowledge or expand their imagination."

Would you recommend a modular library to other schools?

"100%! The process from the design, to ordering, delivery and installing was in a timely manner. The staff were helpful and gave great advice. Having a modular library has really enhanced the provision that we have at school and is an additional resource that supports all our pupils."
