Hitherfield Primary School's Permanent Building for Inclusion & Nurture

At Hitherfield Primary School in London, we designed, manufactured, and installed a permanent building control regulations approved 9.0 m × 6.0 m inclusion cabin, which the school has lovingly named 'the Warren'. This bespoke space provides a calm, flexible environment where pupils can access pastoral interventions, small-group learning, and SEMH support away from the main school build. Carefully planned to fit the school’s site, 'the Warren' enhances the school’s inclusion provision while remaining fully compliant with Building Regulations, ensuring a safe, durable, and long-term solution for their needs.

We revisited the school and spoke to executive headteacher Chris Ashley-Jones and Unta Taiwo, Key Stage 2 SENDCO...

Tell us about Hitherfield Primary & Why You Needed This Space

"Hitherfield is a three form entry urban school in Tulse Hill, Lambeth. We have a lot of children on the site and very limited space. We really needed an extra space, ideally away from the rest of the school, where it could be a calm place for children to relax, have time to talk, and process things, especially for children who maybe sometimes aren't ready for learning, maybe need a break out of the classroom, or time to chat in a quieter area."

"So working alongside Lambeth SEN department, we put a bid in for funding and we were very pleased that we were successful and we were able to get some money to start to plan and design this building. We brought on board with us a consultant company, Studio Cherry, to get the bid in place. And then once the bid had been approved, we could develop it and work with Cabins for Schools!"

How is the Inclusion Cabin Used Day-To-Day?

“We've been using the inclusion cabin in a variety of ways. First of all, we have groups of children coming in here and working with speech and language therapists, or working with our learning mentors in a quiet, dedicated space. But much more than that actually, we're now using the inclusion cabin at lunchtime too for any students that feel like the playground is a bit too busy for them. They can come and have a quieter place or play some calm sensory games. So really it's used for the whole school day and beyond.”

How Does the Building Support Students With Additional Needs / SEMH?

"Some children need support with their understanding and receptive language skills, and a space like 'the Warren' is perfect because it's nice, it's quiet, it's self-contained. It is a magical place. It's got a real specialness to it, and I think the children that come in here really feel that it feels different to a classroom. It creates a little bit of a sanctuary away from the school, and we can offer a range of pastoral and inclusive provisions for children who need it.”

"Hitherfield Primary School is vibrant, it's energetic, and every nook and cranny is used in the school. Now that we have the Warren, interventions are structured across the week. There's more open space for the nurture interventions and the inclusive provisions that we've wanted to have across the school week.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a nurture or inclusion building in a school?

A nurture or inclusion building is a dedicated, low-stimulus space where pupils can regulate, talk, work with trusted adults, or access specialist support such as learning mentors, pastoral teams, or speech and language therapy. Schools use them to create a quieter, calmer environment than the main school building.

Why do schools create separate nurture spaces?

Many schools have limited internal space, busy corridors and classrooms, or a high demand for inclusion, nurture or SEND provision. A separate building provides a calm, predictable environment that helps pupils who need time away from the main school to reset, talk, or work in smaller groups.

Can an inclusion building support pupils with SEMH needs?

Yes. A separate, quieter space can help pupils with social, emotional and mental health needs to regulate, process emotions, or take part in structured support without the noise and pace of the main school environment. Many schools find that a dedicated space improves the quality and consistency of their SEMH provision.

How does a permanent building differ from an outdoor classroom?

Outdoor classrooms are often suitable for part‑time use, small groups or intervention spaces and usually don’t require formal Building Regulations approval. Permanent buildings are intended for full‑time use and everyday learning activities, or may be larger in size, so they must be designed and approved to comply with all relevant building standards. Find out more on our Permanent School Buildings page.

Is accessibility considered in permanent school builds?

Yes. Building Regulations compliance includes accessibility considerations. This can involve options such as wider DDA compliant doors, ramps and handrails to ensure the space is accessible to all pupils.

Can an inclusion building support a range of activities?

Permanent inclusion buildings are flexible spaces that schools use for multiple purposes throughout the school day, from SEMH support and learning interventions to therapy sessions and quiet time away from the main building. Their design supports a variety of group sizes and activities.
