Allesley Primary School's Forest School Connected Cabins

Allesley Primary School in Coventry sought a creative and sustainable solution to support their growing Forest School programme. With a focus on outdoor learning and environmental awareness, the school needed flexible, weatherproof space that could blend seamlessly with their natural surroundings while offering year-round usability.

Together, we agreed that connecting 2 x 14m² cabins with solar domes and a covered porch would be the perfect space to facilitate quality forest learning to the scale they required. By connecting two cabins, we were able to create a spacious and adaptable outdoor learning environment. Using sustainable FSC accredited timber, the build supports Allesley's eco ethos too.

Key Benefits

The connected cabins have transformed the school’s Forest School provision. Pupils now benefit from a dedicated, nature-integrated learning space that supports curriculum enrichment, sensory exploration, and outdoor engagement regardless of the weather. Teachers have praised the cabins for their warmth, usability, and natural light. They can now benefit from:

  • All-weather teaching and learning space

  • Enhanced natural light through solar domes

  • Seamless integration with the woodland setting

  • Encouragement of outdoor, play-based, and experiential learning

  • Supports school sustainability goals

What do the pupils think about their cabin?

Lily Fossey, Allesley Primary's Forest School Lead, collected forest school student voice feedback:

  • 'It helps with my confidence'

  • 'I like being in a small group with people I feel safe with'

  • 'I like learning new skills like cooking on the fire'

  • 'It helps me feel calm'

  • 'It feels loving and inspirational'

  • 'Teaches us how to look after nature'

  • 'Teaches us different opportunities we wouldn't normally get'

  • 'Helps me learn skills you wouldn't at home'

What else do you use the cabin for?

We spoke to Jo Shenton, School Business Manager at Allesley. She told us that while the school utilise their connected cabins as a hub for outdoor learning and facilitating fun and engaging forest school sessions year round, they also use the space to hold external visit meetings with local colleagues and multi-agency support workers. The staff at Allesley being able to welcome other educational professionals into their cabin really speaks to the versatility of their new space!

Jo also said: 'our cabin is the perfect addition to our extensive grounds and woodland area. We are already getting excited about when we can build the next one!'
