Oakridge Junior School's Bespoke Sensory Room
Oakridge Junior School in Basingstoke, part of the Oakridge Schools Federation, wanted to enhance its support for pupils who benefit from sensory environments. Existing areas within the main building were limited and not suited to sensory use or soft play. Having previously chosen Cabins for Schools to install their forest school 'hobbit house' an outdoor classroom and an additional infants room, they returned to us to design, manufacture and install a modular sensory room.
We completed this custom sensory room project in collaboration with our partners, Sensory Technology. The headteacher wanted to create an immersive space with soft play where children could hide, climb, rock, spin and feel fully engaged, alongside all the essential interactive sensory equipment. Together, we agreed on an 8m x 4m modular building with zero-maintenance Marley board cladding. Sensory Technology said: 'this spacious environment offered ample room to accommodate the wide range of sensory equipment requested by the school.'

Sensory Room Design
As we delivered the space as a standalone modular building, together with Sensory Technology we could design the layout specifically around how the room would be used. We incorporated an entrance area to allow pupils to remove their shoes before entering, particularly important as the main space is fully padded. A bespoke padded bench provides a comfortable place for pupils to sit, settle, and transition into the sensory environment.
The cabin itself plays a key role in the success of the space. Positioned away from the main school building, it creates a quieter, more controlled environment with fewer distractions. Inside, the sensory design focuses on creating a calm but engaging atmosphere. Interactive mood lighting gently fills the room with colour, while features such as the Borealis Tube provide a soft, calming focal point with integrated seating.
How is the Sensory and Soft Play Space Used?
"The sensory/soft play room is used daily by children who have a sensory need, those who need support to regulate, and pupils with communication difficulties. The room is timetabled so children have quality, uninterrupted time there. The timetable starts before school for those pupils who struggle to come into school or leave their parents. This has enabled parents to drop children at the start of the day knowing that their child will enter the classroom in a better frame of mind and ready to learn, rather than being distressed and dysregulated. Throughout the day it is used predominantly by pupils who are neurodiverse to reduce levels of anxiety and prepare them for the next lesson or activity."
What features have made the biggest difference in day-to-day use?
"The ball pit has provided children with a safer way to throw things and express their frustration. We find that certain children like to jump into the ball pit a couple of times at the start of the session to get rid of those big feelings and allow quick regulation.
The colourful lights and music system also allows children to express their emotions and compare the lights to our PSHE links (Colour Monster, Zones of Regulation)
The padded flooring and walls give the children who are a bit more-heavy handed the space and safety of allowing those children to throw/push themselves into them
The spinning chair and vibrating wall allow children who seek sensory feedback through hanging upside down, rocking and twirling around to access that need in a safer, controlled space."
How has the sensory space supported your staff in managing pupils’ needs?
"Having the Sensory Cabin has provided staff with a space that is suitable to meet the needs of a child when they are heightened, and the different features give us options of when to use them and how to use them.
The sensory room allows more space for the children to interact with each other in a more controlled and less over-whelming environment.
Having the lights and music included is also great. It allows for cross-curricular links (Such as in PSHE- colour monsters are linked to emotions)."
What changes have you seen in pupils’ behaviour & wellbeing?
"In the short time it has been in use we have already seen a significant impact: pupils are calmer, better able to face challenges in their learning environments and arrive at lessons more prepared for the day.
Children become regulated a lot quicker than before. They know which piece of equipment they need to use to allow them to feel content, and they can identify when and how they need to use the space throughout the day/week too. Plus, the children are becoming aware of their feelings and using the sensory room to be able to identify a safe space for them to use!"
What feedback have you received from pupils, parents/carers & visitors?
"Visitors to our school often comment on how well equipped the space is, and how as a school, we really thought about what features we needed in there to meet the needs of our children.
Pupils like that it is a safe space that has been created for them to use with other children around the school in a way that they might not have been able to before. The children love the lights and the different settings; they thoroughly enjoy recreating their favourite stories and making them sensory themed!
Also, the children enjoy using the space for physical and imaginative play, and they especially love jumping into the ball pit and using the rocky chair!"
Inside the Sensory Space
A range of interactive elements encourage engagement and exploration. The Infinity Panel responds to sound with light, while the Sensory Play Panel introduces tactile features that support hands-on interaction and focus.
A standout feature is the Infinity Den - a quiet, enclosed area designed to provide comfort and security. With soft lighting and mirrored surfaces, it creates a calming hideaway, while also doubling as a safe, padded raised platform for pupils who feel more comfortable at height.
The ball pool adds a more immersive sensory experience, using colour-changing lighting to create a visually engaging environment. It also supports cause-and-effect learning, allowing pupils to interact with and influence their surroundings.
Why a Standalone Sensory Cabin Works
Creating a sensory space within the main school building can be challenging. Noise, interruptions and a lack of suitable available space often make it difficult to achieve the calm, controlled environment pupils need.
A modular cabin designed, manufactured and installed by Cabins for Schools changes that. Positioned away from busy classrooms and corridors, it provides a quieter, more focused setting designed specifically for sensory use. Combined with a specialist fit-out by Sensory Technology, it allows schools to create a purpose-built space that supports both wellbeing and learning.
How was the experience working with Cabins for Schools & Sensory Technology?
"We experienced no issues at all. Sensory Technology fitted the equipment in a timely fashion and returned swiftly when an error was identified. We have used Cabins for Schools for four cabins within our setting and have been very pleased with the efficient process of ordering, delivery and instalment each time."
