Happy Stars Nursery Regulations Compliant School-Based Nursery Build
Bromesberrow St Mary's CofE Primary School is a rural school in Ledbury. They needed a permanent, building regulations compliant building to create a new school-based nursery for 2-4 year olds, which they have called Happy Stars . We designed, manufactured and installed their 10m x 7.5m nursery as a complete turnkey solution, working closely with building control and structural engineers to ensure every aspect of their nursery met the latest safety, energy and accessibility requirements.
In our case study, executive headteacher Laura Hankins talks openly about why rural schools have to work harder to attract families, how introducing nursery provision has helped strengthen their school community, the lessons they learnt during the project, and the advice they'd give to other schools considering a similar investment.

Why Did You Decide to Create a School-Based Nusery?
"We are all about being a school of choice, and as a school in a rural community, you have to work for it. You're not going to have that natural catchment. So for us, it's about getting children as young as we can to be part of the Bromesberrow family. With a school-based nursery, children and parents can get to know us, we get to know them, and it's a smoother transition into school.
Without this build, we wouldn't have been able to take on children that are pre-school age, it would have been impossible, we don't have the space within our own buildings. So I think for small rural schools to survive, spaces like this are essential."
How Did You Fund The Nursery Project?
"We got a little bit of Section 106 funding to help, and then we got the Department for Education (DfE) money to support as well. There are funding pots out there! Obviously there's investment in nurseries and young children, which is brilliant. My advice to other schools is that it's about communicating with your local authorities. I reached out, had that communication, and had lots of support actually through the process. So there's people there that will support you through it."
How Does the New Nursery Support Children's Learning?
"We use something called continuous provision, and continuous provision is all about children being able to learn through play. This space just really promotes that and enables us to support those children, particularly those children with different kinds of profiles. We found that actually being out in nature and having these really calm, relaxed spaces is a huge, huge boon and is really supporting them to integrate. It's light, it's airy, it feels really welcoming."
How Have Parents & Children Reacted To The Build?
"Parent feedback has been that they love the space. They love the fact that it's got that lightness. They love the fact that it feels modern, but also complementary to the setting. People want to know that their child has got a clean, safe, but also a fun environment. They've got all those elements that you want for your child to be able to play, learn, explore. The main thing I've got from children is the fact they want to be here. You've got happy children, happy staff, and then happy parents. It's a big, big winner!"
