Alfreton Park School's Workshop Building for Hands On Learning

What started as two students repairing bikes as part of their Duke of Edinburgh Award has grown into a dedicated cycle workshop that's transforming opportunities for young people at Alfreton Park School in Derbyshire. Designed to support vocational learning, practical life skills and student independence, this workshop building we designed, manufactured and installed for the school provides a real workshop environment where students can develop confidence, gain qualifications and take ownership of a project they're proud to call their own.

Hear directly from Assistant Headteacher Peter and Teaching & Learning Assistant Richard as they explain how the cycle hub came to life, the impact it's already having on students, and their exciting plans to develop it into a community resource that creates future employment opportunities for former pupils...

How Did The Cycle Workshop Project First Come About?

"The whole project came about from two students who were taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh project. They were doing cycling and they started the project as a small thing. They started fixing bikes out in the playground, and that sparked the students' idea to learn how to fix bikes and create our own workshop.

We just wanted a little shed to fix bikes, but also to link in with a D of E project. When the cabin arrived, it's been a case of the students coming down and getting out into a workshop. It's theirs and they're proud of it."

What Difference Has Having a Dedicated Workshop Made?

"It's a real environment. It's not a role-play area. This is a workshop where they go and work and take it seriously. I think that's what you can see in the students when they take part in the project. They show real ownership over it and they're really proud of what they created together."

"We want this project to build on the students' interest and their curiosity, and it can offer them qualifications which they can take away with themselves. The space itself is so beneficial - this beautiful wooden cabin with the elevated views over the fields. Students will get a lot out of it without realising, and it's a lovely space to be in."

How Are Students Using The Cycle Hub Day-To-Day?

"The students can come down here and get out of it what they wish, really. They're not necessarily just fixing bikes, they're also coming here for reading, doing the jigsaws,  and playing a bit of music. Once they realise it's not just about fixing bikes, they can get out of it what they wish. It will appeal to different children in different ways."

What Are Your Long-Term Plans For The Cycle Workshop?

"We would like to use this cycle workshop to connect further with the community. We've had some donated bikes already which we'd like to repair and sell those bikes at a low cost. It would become self-funded, really, a not-for-profit cycle workshop where we would hope to employ previous students at the school. Long-term, we hope that previous students could come in and gain a bit of employment in a cycle workshop or cycle shop."
